EMND
EMND — Educational Music Neuro-Development
Cognitive Development Through Music
EMND is a practice-based, research-informed educational approach developed by Nellie Parsons.
It uses structured musical activities to engage learners in processes involving attention, observation, memory, planning, decision-making, problem-solving, and self-awareness.
Music provides a rich educational environment in which these processes can be explored through listening, movement, coordination, creative activity, and reflection.
Enquire About EMNDMusic provides opportunities to think, explore, and learn.
Musical activities involve more than producing sounds or learning an instrument.
They can require learners to listen carefully, recognise patterns, coordinate actions, remember sequences, anticipate changes, and respond to feedback.
In EMND, these experiences are deliberately structured to encourage engagement with the learning process.
The emphasis is not on musical performance or examination results. It is on how the learner approaches the activity.
An active learning experience
Depending on the individual learner, activities may include:
Listening and aural recognition.
Rhythm and movement.
Singing and vocal exploration.
Piano-based activities.
Handwriting and musical notation.
Pattern recognition and sequencing.
Creative composition.
Planning, reflection, and self-monitoring.
Activities are selected and adapted according to the learner's needs, responses, and educational objectives.
Developing the process of learning
Attention and observation
Learning to notice relevant information, listen carefully, and respond thoughtfully.
Making connections
Relating unfamiliar information to previous knowledge and experience.
Planning and decision-making
Exploring possible approaches, considering alternatives, and recognising the consequences of choices.
Problem-solving
Identifying difficulties, experimenting with solutions, and learning from feedback.
Independence
Gradually developing the ability to monitor progress and take greater responsibility for learning.
These are educational objectives, not guarantees of specific outcomes.
Who is EMND for?
Children
Individual educational sessions adapted to the learner's developmental stage and learning needs. The programme uses structured activities and consistent participation to encourage engagement and progressive learning. Children normally attend two 45-minute sessions per week.
Adults
Individualised, time-limited programmes for adults interested in exploring learning processes, cognitive engagement, and structured music-based educational activities. No previous musical experience is necessarily required.
Small groups
Selected group programmes may be available where participants have compatible learning objectives and appropriate levels of participation.
Every learner begins from a different starting point.
An initial assessment and evaluation helps establish an understanding of the learner's current abilities, learning approaches, and educational priorities.
This informs programme planning and provides an opportunity to discuss realistic objectives and expectations.

The assessment is educational in nature and is not a medical, neurological, or clinical diagnostic assessment.
Enquire About an AssessmentEMND is not conventional music tuition.
Although music is the primary educational medium, the focus is cognitive and learning development rather than instrumental grades or musical performance.
Learners whose main objective is piano, singing, examinations, or advanced musical study should explore the separate MUSIC programme.
